At its core, a refrigerator does not actually generate cold; rather, it removes heat from its interior and releases it into the surrounding room. This continuous cycle of heat exchange relies on the principles of thermodynamics and the phase changes of a specialized chemical compound known as a refrigerant.

The refrigeration cycle consists of four main components: the compressor, the condenser, the expansion valve, and the evaporator. The process begins with the compressor, which acts as the mechanical heart of the system. It draws in low-pressure, warm refrigerant gas from the refrigerator's interior and compresses it. This compression significantly increases both the pressure and the temperature of the gas, preparing it for the next stage.

The hot, high-pressure gas then flows into the condenser coils, typically located on the back or bottom of the appliance. As room-temperature air blows across these coils, the refrigerant releases its heat into the kitchen. As it loses thermal energy, the refrigerant condenses into a high-pressure liquid. Finally, this freezing mixture enters the evaporator coils inside the refrigerator compartment. The cold refrigerant absorbs heat from the surrounding air, cooling the interior of the appliance.
